The Black Yearbook

Fall 2019 – Present

“The University of Texas at Austin prides itself in its diversity. Yet of its nearly 52,000 students, only 2,473 are black. Last year, only 925 black men were enrolled on campus, roughly 1.7% of the campus population.”

In the words of its creator Adraint Bereal, The Black Yearbook is a document of “small moments of radiance in the lives of Black Texan college students,” and contains over 100 interviews with Black students at the University of Texas.

The visual aesthetics and graphic contents of the book aim to be experimental, challenging, and not easily defined. The Black Yearbook seeks to remind the world that Blackness is not a monolith, and that each and every black student has an experience and story completely unique to themselves.
