What They Don’t Teach You…
Spring 2020
What They Don’t Teach You in Design School: Survival Guide to Life After Graduation is a zine made in collaboration with AIGA Eye on Design and The University of Texas at Austin during a six-week publication course led by Eye on Design founder and former editor Perrin Drumm. While some students interviewed design professionals for the zine’s written content, I designed spreads for the “Day In the Life Of” section.
With direction from Perrin and additional design by Tala Safié, these spreads were intended to mimic college calendars and syllabi—densely packed, overwhelming, and full of information. Of course, a printed syllabus would be nothing without a few mindless doodles in the white space. Grilli Type’s simple and classic GT Alpina helped amplify the typically “non-designed” look of syllabi without being too generic.

What They Don’t Teach You… was designed to be an all-in-one survivial guide to life after graduation, made by students for students. It includes interviews with design professionals from all backgrounds and practices, advice on internships, and an array of helpful resources.

I also had the opportunity to design spot illustrations for the feature article written by Julian Glander. These were especially fun, and came with the challenge of referencing an artist without trying to just copy their style. Glander’s 3D illustrations are full of character, so I wanted mine to bring that same energy.
